Neural tube defects (NTDs) refer to a group of often severe congenital malformations of
the central nervous system (CNS) that arise from a failure in neural tube closure in the first
month of human embryonic development. This failure can occur during the processes of
primary or secondary neurulation or postneurulation skeletogenesis. With a prevalence of
0.5–10 per 1000 live births and considerable variability among population geographic
regions and ancestral background, NTDs are estimated to result in 300 000–500 000 new …
Summary
Neural tube closure is critical for the formation of the human brain and spinal cord. Broader, more all-inclusive perspectives are emerging to identify the genetic determinants of human NTDs.
